Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on 'One Nation, One Election'
The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on ‘One Nation, One Election’ has been actively examining the feasibility and framework for conducting simultaneous elections across India. This initiative aims to synchronize elections for the Lok Sabha, State Assemblies, and local bodies to streamline the electoral process and reduce associated costs.

Committee Composition and Leadership
The JPC comprises 39 members, including 27 from the Lok Sabha and 12 from the Rajya Sabha, representing a diverse spectrum of political parties. The committee is chaired by Shri P. P. Chaudhary, a senior advocate and BJP MP from Pali, Rajasthan. He has previously served as Minister of State for Law & Justice and Corporate Affairs and has chaired several key parliamentary committees.

Mandate and Objectives
The JPC is tasked with examining the Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill, 2024, and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024. These bills propose amendments to facilitate simultaneous elections, including:
Addition of Article 82(A): Mandating concurrent elections for the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies.
Amendments to Articles 83, 172, and 327: Adjusting the duration of Houses and empowering Parliament to legislate on elections.
Fixed Tenure Mechanism: In cases of premature dissolution, elections would be held only for the remainder of the term.

The committee has engaged in extensive consultations with various stakeholders, including:Business Standard
Former Chief Justices such as Ranjan Gogoi and Rajendra Menon.
Legal Experts and Election Commission officials.
Political Parties, State Governments, and Civil Society Organizations.
Industry Bodies like CII and FICCI.
To encourage public participation, the JPC plans to launch a dedicated website and publish advertisements inviting citizens to submit their opinions on the initiative.
Initially, the committee was to submit its report by the last week of the parliamentary session. However, recognizing the need for thorough deliberation, the Lok Sabha extended the JPC’s tenure until the first day of the last week of the Monsoon Session.
